Baseball Travels to Luther for Weekend Series

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (14-7 overall, 5-0 IIAC) travels to face Luther (10-9, 3-5) in a conference weekend series. The Knights bring an overall winning streak of seven and a conference winning streak of five into the matchup.

The Series
Wartburg owns the all-time series lead at 70-46. The Knights won three of the four regular-season meetings last year, but the Norse won the two games in the conference tournament.

Junior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) has a team-best .407 batting average. Seven teammates join him above .300: junior Eric Willis (Waverly) at .402, classmate David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) at .358, senior Austin Lechtenberg (DeWitt) at .333, junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) at .323, senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) at .321, and junior Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.) at .317.

Mahoney leads the team with 21 RBIs.

Senior Max Langheinrich (Minnetonka, Minn.) leads the starting pitchers with a 3.51 ERA and is 2-1 in 33.1 innings pitched with 27 strikeouts.

Career Record Watch
Thumann needs four home runs to become the program's all-time leader in that category. Gilson has entered the top 10 list at No. 9 in strikeouts (169).

Luther
Joe Silversmith and Mitch Bruggers co-lead the team (.371) and Joey Sullivan follows at .350. Cody Reimer leads the starting pitching staff with his 2.49 ERA and is 2-1 in 25.1 innings pitched with 21 strikeouts.

The Knights rank 5th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.44), 8th in walks allowed per nine innings (2.18), 12th in fielding percentage (0.974), 20th in WHIP (1.24), 52nd in home runs per game (0.63), 53rd in batting average (0.318), 54th in home runs (12), 63rd in earned run average (3.80), 72nd in stolen bases per game (1.89), 76th in stolen bases (36), 79th in hits allowed per nine innings (9.00), 88th in W/L pct (0.632), and 96th in strikeouts per nine innings (7.5).

Individually, one Knight ranks in the top 100 of two different categories. Senior Jake Thumann (Dewitt, Iowa) ranks 25th in home runs (5), and 30th in home runs per game (0.26).
