PELLA, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (26-10 overall, 17-3 IIAC) not only completed the season sweep of Central (18-19, 10-11) Monday, but also moved its winning streak to eight.
The Knights jumped to a 4-0 lead after the first which included a three-run home run by junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) and nearly doubled their lead in the next inning with three runs on one hit.
The Orange and Black plated two in the fourth and fifth innings, and tallied four in the sixth which included a two-run double from Hyler.
Defensively, Wartburg did not allow a Dutch baserunner past first base the entire game in the run-rule win.
Hyler went 4-5 and had a career-best seven RBIs. Senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) went 2-3 and junior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) scored a career-high four runs.
Senior Taylor Gilson (Oelwein) earned his team-leading eighth victory and struck out 10 in the outing.
The Knights return to the field tomorrow when they host Coe in the nine-inning game of the conference series at 7 p.m.
