CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- Wartburg advanced on the winner's side of the bracket of the Iowa Conference Tournament in its 7-3 win over Coe Thursday. The Knights will face Buena Vista Friday at 1 p.m.
Senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) gave the Orange and Black the early lead with his two-run home run that cleared the party deck in left field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Kohawks plated three in the third which included two RBI doubles to take the 3-2 lead. Junior Eric Willis (Waverly) knotted the game at three all in the fifth as he scored on Thuman's sacrifice fly to right field.
Wartburg regained the lead in the sixth (5-3) as junior Zach Hovick (Roland) scored on senior Mike Brown's (Bettendorf) double and Brown crossed the plate on Willis' single to center.
The Knights plated their final two runs in the eighth as junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) hit a leadoff double and then changed places with Brown who had a double to left. Brown moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
Willis went 4-5 and Brown was 3-4 with two doubles.
Senior Max Langheinrich (Minnetonka, Minn.) pitched seven complete innings and struck out seven to earn the win. Junior Austin Bohling (Letts) earned the save.
