CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (30-12 overall) advanced on the winner's side of the bracket of the Iowa Conference Tournament in the 9-6 win over Buena Vista Friday. The Knights will play in the 1 p.m. game Saturday against the winner of the 10 a.m. game.
BV took the early 1-0 lead in its first at-bats and the Orange and Black tied it in the second on an RBI single from senior Mike Brown (Bettendorf).
The Beavers plated another in the third to take the 2-1 lead, but junior Eric Willis (Waverly) hit a solo homer into the party deck in left field and classmate Cody Hyler (Des Moines) drove in junior Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.) for the go-ahead run.
Wartburg added three in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it 7-2. This remained the score until the eighth when senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) hit his team-leading 12th home run over the right field fence which also plated junior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines).
BV compiled a rally as it scored four on two hits in the top of the ninth.
Hyler finished 3-4 at the plate to lead the team.
