Wartburg Advances on Brown's Walkoff Fielder's Choice

SAUGET, Ill.-- The Wartburg baseball team (33-13 overall) advanced in the NCAA Tournament in the 1-0 walkoff win in 12 innings against No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis (27-10). This was the longest game in NCAA Tournament history for Wartburg as the previous mark was 10 innings in 2001 against Illinois Wesleyan and 2002 against Carthage.

In the bottom of the 12th, senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) drew a leadoff walk, junior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) singled through the middle and Thumann advanced to third. Senior Mike Brown (Bettendorf) had the walkoff fielder's choice as WashU's second baseman chose to try to get the lead runner but Thumann beat the throw.

Junior Zach Hovick (Roland) broke up the no-hitter in the third with his single up the middle.

In the top of the fifth, the Bears had bases loaded with two outs. The next batter flew out to center field to end the threat.

Thumann kept the game scoreless with his throw that was right on target to get WashU's runner trying to score.

The Orange and Black had an opportunity to win in the bottom of the 10th as they had the bases loaded with two outs. The next batter unfortunately struck out to send the game to the 11th.

Senior Taylor Gilson (Oelwein) and junior Austin Bohling (Letts) combined for the shutout as Gilson threw seven complete innings and Bohling earned the win as he went 5.0 innings.
