WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College Knights men soccer team (9-6-3 overall) drew a 0-0 double overtime tie against the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves (8-8-1), but advanced to the semifinal of the American Rivers Conference tournament on PKs, 4-2.
The Knights attempted almost three times more shots than the Prairie Wolves (30-11) but were unable to find many shots towards the net, as only 11 of those shots came on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Paul Koebke Barsic (Madison, Wis.) recorded six saves in 110 minutes of play, but was taken out when the two teams attempted PKs in favor of senior
Gunnar Lenzen (Cedar Rapids).
Wartburg attempted the first PK of the shootout, as
Michael Hegelheimer (Ames) attempted and connected on his first attempt. Nebraska Wesleyan's Jacob Dougherty scored on the Prairie Wolves' first attempt.
Ben Johnson (Marion) sunk the Knights second attempt before Nebraska Wesleyan's Logan Lawrence would have his shot blocked by Lenzen. Shots by
Jack Palen (Norwalk) and
Kevin Duque (Storm Lake), coupled with a missed shot from Nebraska Wesleyan's Ben Schulz would seal the deal as the Knights advanced 4-2 on PKs.
The Orange and Black will face No. 2 seed Luther College on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
