Wartburg Sweeps Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb.-- The Wartburg baseball team (11-5 overall, 2-0 IIAC) swept Nebraska Wesleyan (4-12, 0-5) 7-5 and 10-9 in 10 innings Friday. The Knights moved their overall winning streak to five.

The first game was scoreless until the fifth when senior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) hit a two-run single to centerfield. The Prairie Wolves plated one in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double.

In the seventh, senior Eric Willis (Waverly) started the three-run inning with his single to right which scored freshman pinch runner JoJo McNair (Joliet, Ill.). Willis stole second, advanced to third on a failed pickoff and scored on the next batter, Fitzgerald's single to center. Fitzgerald later scored on a wild pitch to give the Orange and Black the 5-1 lead.

NWU plated three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, thanks in part to a two-run homer, which sliced the lead to 5-4.

Senior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) hit a two-run home run in the ninth to left to push the lead to 7-4. The Prairie Wolves scored one in their final at-bat.

Willis went 3-4 and senior Tanner Eckhart (Monticello, Minn.) earned the win with his 6.0 innings of work. Classmate Austin Bohling (Letts) recorded another save.

In the second game of the twinbill, the score was knotted at nine all heading into the ninth inning. After Wartburg was retired in order, Nebraska Wesleyan had runners at first and second with two outs. The next batter hit into a fielder's choice to send it into extras.

In the 10th, senior Zach Hovick (Roland) hit his first career homer to left to regain the lead for the Knights at 10-9. The Prairie Wolves' second batter singled up the middle with one out, but was left stranded, as the next two guys flew out to seal the Friday sweep.

Senior Nathan Brown (Des Moines) earned his second win on the mound in relief as McNair went 2-5 and senior Clay Henning (Des Moines) was 2-4.

The teams return to the field tomorrow for the final game of the conference series.
