Wartburg Increases Winning Streak to Eight in Sweep of Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team moved its winning streak to eight in the sweep of Simpson Monday. The Knights won the first game 17-3 in eight innings and the nightcap, 24-5 in seven innings. The Orange and Black are now 14-5 overall and 5-0 in Iowa Conference games, while the Storm fell to 2-17, 1-7. The 24 runs was the fourth-most in a single game in program history.

The first game was scoreless until the fifth when Wartburg plated seven. This included a three-run home run by senior Eric Willis (Waverly). Some other highlights include a two-run triple by freshman JoJo McNair (Joliet, Ill.) as part of the eight-run eighth.

McNair finished 4-6 with three RBIs and three runs. Senior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) was 3-6 and classmate Zach Hovick (Roland) finished 3-5.

In the nightcap, the Knights scored three in each of the first three innings. This included a two-run homer by senior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) in the second. Simpson plated its five runs all in the fifth inning.

The Orange and Black later scored 12 runs in the seventh inning. The run total was the third-highest plated in a single inning in school history.

Hovick was 4-6 with five RBIs and three runs. Hyler was 3-3 with three RBIs and one run. He finished a triple shy of the cycle. Fitzgerald was 3-5 with five runs and three RBIs, and freshman Parker Ridge (Marion) was 3-7 with two RBIs.

Wartburg returns to the field Friday when it hosts Loras in a weekend series.
