Knights Sweep Spartans to Claim Series

DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (17-9 overall, 6-4 IIAC) swept Dubuque (13-14, 8-4) Saturday to claim the conference series.

The Knights won 3-0 and 3-2.

In the third inning of the first game of the day, senior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) hit a leadoff double to right field, and later scored on classmate Clay Henning's (Plymouth, Wis.) double down the right field line. Freshman Parker Ridge (Marion) scored on classmate JoJo McNair's (Joliet, Ill.) sac fly to give the Orange and Black the 2-0 lead.

McNair would later score the final run of the game in the fifth as he took advantage of fielding errors.

The Spartans threatened to score in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but were thrown out at the plate.

Ridge was 3-4 at the plate. Sophomore Ben Milewski (Lake Villa, Ill.) pitched 8.0 innings and struck out four in the outing. Senior Austin Bohling (Letts) earned his sixth save of the season.

In the finale, a similar story rang true as the Orange and Black took the 2-0 lead in the fourth. Senior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) drove in classmates Eric Willis (Waverly) and Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) on his single to centerfield.

Dubuque tallied one in the fifth on an RBI groundout and tied it in the seventh on a sac fly.

McNair scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on senior Zach Hovick's (Roland) single to center. The Spartans were retired in order in the ninth to seal the sweep.

Mahoney went 3-4 and freshman Dylan Gotto (Peosta) threw 7.0 innings and fanned five while Bohling earned another save. Bohling is now tied for second on the program's saves list with nine.

Wartburg returns to the field Tuesday when it hosts conference leader Coe in the doubleheader of the series at 3:30 p.m.
