WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College Knights men's soccer team will face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m.
The Knights (4-4 overall; 1-0 ARC) are in the midst of a three-game win streak coming into the matchup after trouncing American Rivers Conference foe Coe College 6-0 over the weekend. The Knights are led in scoring by
Ben Johnson (Marion) with seven goals, followed by
Ayo Adebayo (Rochester, Minn.) and
Jack Palen (Norwalk) with four a piece. Senior goalkeeper
Paul Koebke Barsic (Madison, Wis.) has been a solid presence in the goal this season, as the senior carries a 4-0 record to go along with 16 saves in 325 minutes of action. This match will be the final nonconference foe the Knights will see for just under a month, when they take on the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Oct. 23.
The Warhawks (4-3-1) are currently riding their own three-game win streak into this week's contest, most recently defeating Fontbonne University (Mo.) 2-0 over the weekend. The Warhawks have been solid on the road, boasting a 3-1-1 overall record in those contests. Whitewater has combined to score 18 goals this season, with Hozai Ceballos leading the way with five. The Warhawks have out-shot their opponents 124-87 thus far in the season. Whitewater is coached by Tony Guinn, who is in the midst of his seventh year at the helm and owns a career record of 74-31-17 at UW-Whitewater. Guinn is assisted by Scott Surprise and Jordan Kayser.
The two programs have faced off a total of six times in their respective histories, with the Warhawks getting the best of the Knights by a 2-4 all-time record in the series. The last time the Knights faced the Warhawks was on Sept. 14, 2013, when the Knights traveled to Whitewater and fell to the Warhawks 2-1 in overtime.
