WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Wartburg College Knights baseball team (2-5 overall) split their doubleheader on Saturday with the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (1-3), losing the first game 6-0 and winning the second 5-4 in extra innings.
In the first game, UMass Dartmouth scored the game's first run at the top of the second off of an error by sophomore
Parker Ridge (Marion). The Corsairs held the 1-0 lead through the next two innings before adding on two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take the 6-0 victory.
Pitcher
Ben Milewski (Lake Villa) pitched five innings in the first game, retiring eight batters and only allowing four hits against 25 batters faced.
Matt Milewski (Lake Villa) pitched the final two innings, striking out one out of the nine batters he faced.
In the second game of the double header, the Corsairs struck first again in the bottom of the first off of a single to left by Chris Wood, which brought in UMD's Jr. Disarcina to take the 1-0 lead.
Three scoreless innings went by before Wartburg exploded for four runs at the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single by junior
Andrew Walker (Eagan, Minn.) to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
The Corsairs responded with a three-run inning at the bottom of the fifth to tie up the game at 4-4. Both teams failed to generate offense over the next four innings, taking the game into extras.
At the top of the 10
th, junior catcher
Joey Baumann (Woodbury, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in freshman
Ryan Willis (Waverly) for the go-ahead score. A scoreless bottom of the 10
th pitched by
Manny Jeffery (Marion) gave Jeffery his first victory of the season (1-0) and gave the Knights the 5-4 victory, snapping their four-game skid.
Wartburg returns to the field tomorrow to face Cornell College (1-0) in the final game of their Florida tournament.
