ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Wartburg College Knights baseball team (13-26 overall) split its doubleheader with the St. Thomas Tommies (20-17) on Monday afternoon. The Knights fell 1-0 to the Tommies in game one, but claimed game two 6-1.
The Orange and Black recorded four hits in game one, two by junior
Tyler Hovick (Roland) and one by sophomore
JoJo McNair (Joliet, Ill.) and sophomore
Parker Ridge (Marion) apiece. Junior
Manny Jeffery (Marion) made his first-career start as a pitcher, going a strong 4.1 innings, retiring two batters and not giving up a run before being subbed out for junior
Baylor Bedard (Raymond).
Bedard pitched the next 1.2 innings, not allowing a hit over that span, before sophomore
Adam Sacia (Eldridge) made his first appearance of the season by coming in for the final inning. St. Thomas managed to get a runner on second before Sacia gave up the walk-off RBI double to end game one at 1-0.
Game two saw the fortunes turn for the Knights, as they were the ones to score first with a one-run second inning that saw freshman
Max Goodhue (Carlisle) record his fifth RBI of the season on a single to short. The Orange and Black pushed their lead to 2-0 after freshman
Jarod Harris (Manchester) connected on his second-career home run at the top of the fourth.
The Tommies responded by trimming the deficit to one after scoring a run at the bottom of the fourth. The Knights came back with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from junior
Tyler Nunemaker (Ely) to lead it 5-1.
Nunemaker recorded a third RBI of the day after connecting on a RBI single to left field to push the Knights' lead to five (6-1). Senior
Robert Primrose (Adel) pitched a clean seventh inning to secure season finale victory for the Knights.
