Last Time Out
The Knights wrapped up play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 5-3 record. In its last game, Wartburg fell to Waynesburg 4-2 after beating them 14-1 earlier that week.
The Orange & Black took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second to make the score 1-0. The lead didn't last long because the Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the top of the third after two RBI singles and a groundout RBI.
The Knights were held to just two hits and one run over the rest of the game and held Waynesburg to two hits and no runs since the fourth inning.
Season Leaders
Zach Walton leads Wartburg offensively with team highs in batting average (.455) and RBI with 13. The sophomore first baseman has hit two doubles, one triple, and one homerun so far for the Knights. Walton has also drawn six walks and has been hit with five pitches.
Zach Wesolowski and
Caleb Andrews are both hitting over .400 with averages of .417 and .407 respectively. Wesolowski has batted in nine RBI, hit four doubles, and scored a team-high 16 runs. Andrews has a team-high 11 hits and has batted in two runs for the Knights.
Dylan Gotto leads pitchers in strikeouts so far with 19 through two appearances and 12 innings pitched. Gotto has a record of 1-1 in starts and his ERA is 2.25 through the two appearances.
Dreyton LaVeine has a team-high ERA of 0.90 through two appearances and 10 innings pitched. The sophomore right hander pitched a complete game shutout against Saint Vincent College and has 11 total strikeouts through both appearances.
Gustavus Adolphus
The Gusties enter Sunday's matchup with a record of 1-2 and have faced two American Rivers Conference teams to start the season.
Gustavus opened the season getting swept by Luther in a doubleheader and then got in the win column against Simpson the following day.
Saint Mary's
The Cardinals went 4-4 over their Florida spring trip, including a loss to the University of Dubuque. Saint Mary's has also played the Milwaukee School of Engineering and lost a close game 5-4. The Knights faced the MSOE three times and went 1-2 in those matchups.
Saint Mary's is averaging 7.75 runs per contest and are hitting an average of .277 overall as a team. Jack Arndt leads the Cardinal offense with 11 RBI and a batting average of .400.
Series History
The Orange & Black have had six matchups with Gustavus Adolphus since the 2009 season and the Gusties have won four out of those six. The most recent meeting came in 2019 where the Knights split a doubleheader on the road at Gustavus.
Since 2007, Wartburg is 6-1 against Saint Mary's University. The last matchup took place during the 2017 season where the Knights split a doubleheader with the Cardinals.
