Baseball to Host Simpson in Weekend Series

WAVERLY, Iowa - Knights baseball continue American Rivers Conference play this week with a three-game series at home against Simpson College beginning on Saturday, Apr. 23.

Last Time Out
The Orange & Black were on the road last weekend for a series with the conference leading Buena Vista University where the Beavers took two out of three games. The Knights won game one and then fell in both games of the doubleheader the next day.
 
Game 1: Wartburg 2, BVU 10
Max Goodhue and Zach Walton recorded four out of the Knights' five hits and both extra-base hits. Walton finished 2/3 at the plate with two RBI and a double. Goodhue hit his fourth triple of the season and scored both runs for the Orange & Black. Zach Wesolowski recorded the other hit for the Knights with his single in the second inning.
 
Kyle Oberbroeckling and Malcolm Newell pitched a combined three hitless innings to close the game for the Knights. Oberbroeckling pitched one inning while Newell pitched the final two innings and recorded one strikeout.
 
Game 2: Wartburg 3, BVU 7
Walton had another multi-hit game in the nightcap going 2/3 with one homerun. The homer was his eighth of the season and he is now at 43 RBI this season. Ben DeKruyf was the only other Knight with a mutli-hit game in game two and he recorded one of the three RBI.
 
Darren Kilpatrick started on the bump for the Orange & Black and went 3.1 innings in the loss. The senior's record is now 3-4 through eight starts. Oberbroeckling pitched the final two innings for the Knights and allowed no runs and three hits.

Conference Standings
Buena Vista University sits atop the standings with a conference record of 11-4 and an overall mark of 19-10. The Knights are second in the conference by a slim margin over Coe College. Luther, Dubuque and Loras round out the top six with .500+ A-R-C records for all three. Full A-R-C Standings
 
Season Leaders
During Friday's start, Dylan Gotto pitched seven innings and recorded 10 strikeouts to set the career record for strikeouts in Wartburg history. The record was previously held by Bradley Watson, who had 242 punchouts in his career for the Knights. Gotto leads the A-R-C in innings pitched with 55 and is second in strikeouts with 64 through 8 appearances this season.
 
Aaron Eybers has the most appearances on the mound for the Knights with 13 and none are starts. The senior reliever has a record of 2-1 this season and has recorded three of the team's four total saves.
 
Walton leads the Orange & Black at the plate with a batting average of .410 and leads the A-R-C at 43 RBI. The Knights' first basemen has eight homeruns this season, which is second best in the conference behind Derek Kolbush's 11 homers. The sophomore leads the conference in OPS at 1.345 and in walks drawn with 27. Walton also currently has a reached base streak of 17 straight games.
 
Goodhue leads the team in total hits so far this season with 47 despite missing three games. The senior outfielder is batting .395 for the Knights and leads the conference in triples with four. Goodhue has 16 extra-base hits and has drove in 24 runs.
 
Simpson
The Storm enters this weekend's series winners of four of their last five contests but are currently in eighth place in the A-R-C standings. Simpson has an overall record of 15-14 and are 6-9 in conference play.
 
In their last time out, Simpson took both games of the doubleheader against Central on Tuesday, Apr. 19.
 
Brady Held leads the Storm at the plate with a team-best average of .414, which is third highest in the conference. Held is tied for the most RBI and homeruns on the team with 21 and three respectively.
 
Kolton Arnold is tied for the conference lead in doubles with 17 on the season.
 
Held has the most innings pitched for the Storm at 47.1, which is third most in the A-R-C. Through eight appearances and seven starts the senior has a record of 4-0 on the mound. His 83 strikeouts this season are the most in the conference by an almost 20 strikeout lead. He is holding opposing batters to a conference best .176 batting average against him.
 
Brett Kauzlarich has five wins for Simpson on the bump and leads the team in appearances with 14 this season. The senior has allowed just one homerun and has struck out 52 batters through 36.2 innings pitched.
 
The Orange & Black have won five of the last seven meetings with Simpson.
