Knights Defeat Buena Vista 7-3 in A-R-C Tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Wartburg baseball continued its American Rivers Conference Tournament run with a 7-3 win over number one seeded Buena Vista University on Friday, May 13.
 
Game Summary
Both teams started the game with a hitless first inning before Buena Vista took a 1-0 lead in the bottom second after a fielder's choice brought the first run across. Both teams had base runners left stranded in the third and it remained 1-0 after three innings.
 
The Knights got a two-out single from Keaton Gray that led to back-to-back RBI doubles from Will Armstrong and Bryce Butler that gave Wartburg a 2-1 lead. Both teams recorded one hit in the fifth inning, but no runs came across.
 
Armstrong recorded another RBI after a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and then Max Goodhue homered in the seventh inning to add another two runs. The Orange & Black held BVU hitless over the two innings and led 5-1 after seven innings.
 
In the eighth inning DeKruyf led off with a single and then scored after Gray tripled to right field. Butler reached base on an error and it brought home Gray to push the Knights lead to 7-1. The Beavers put up two runs in the bottom half after a hit by pitch and fielder's choice.
 
The Knights didn't score in the top of the ninth and then secured the win in the bottom of the ninth with Aaron Eybers on the mound.
 
Game Leaders
Goodhue went 3/5 at the plate with two RBI and one home run. The homer marked his third of the season. Armstrong finished tied with a team-high two RBI after his double and sacrifice fly.
 
Gray finished three for four at the dish for the Knights and batted in one run from his triple in the eighth inning.

Joey Ciero got the start for the Knights on the mound and went seven innings. He struck out three batters and allowed just four hits in the win. He is now 3-6 in decisions as a starter this season.

Next Time Out
The Knights will move on to face Loras College tomorrow at 10 a.m. for a chance to move on to the championship series.
