2022 Hall of Fame Class Announced

WAVERLY, Iowa—Nine individuals will be inducted into the Wartburg College Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the annual Homecoming & Family Weekend festivities this fall.
 

Stephanie (Rasmussen) Anderson, a 2003 graduate, was a four-year member of the softball team. She was named Second-team All-Region her senior year and All-Conference her junior year. Anderson was a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree, an NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete, and a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. She holds the career records for innings pitched (538.0), shutouts (18), and appearances (118), and the single game record for strikeouts (15). Anderson ranks in the top 10 of seven other categories, and continues to hold four season records. She and her family live overseas and work for a non-profit sports organization.

Nevada (Morrison) Curtis, a 2012 graduate, was a four-year member of the women's track and field program. She was an eight-time National Champion in the 4x400m relay (meaning she swept National Championship honors in this event at both the indoor and outdoor National Championships all four years of her career), and a three-time National Champion in the 400m dash. Morrison was a 22-time All-American. She swept the 2012 USTFCCCA Regional Athlete of the Year and National Athlete of the Year honors for both indoor and outdoor seasons for track. Wartburg won three indoor team National Championships and two outdoor team National Championships in her career. The 2012 squads set the meet points record for indoor and outdoor conference and indoor and outdoor National Championships in the recent scoring era. The Knights won eight conference team championships in her four years. Morrison still owns five school records. She is a child abuse investigator at Riverside County DHS of public Social Services and lives in Menifee, Calif., with her husband, Eli.

Skye (Morrison) Harvey, a 2012 graduate, was a four-year member of the women's track and field program. She was a three-time National Champion in the long jump and a three-time National Champion in the 4x400m relay. Harvey was a 15-time All-American. She swept the 2012 USTFCCCA Regional Athlete of the Year and National Athlete of the Year honors for the indoor season for field events. Wartburg won three indoor team National Championships and two outdoor team National Championships in her career. The 2012 squads set the meet points record for indoor and outdoor conference and indoor and outdoor National Championships in the recent scoring era. The Knights won eight conference team championships in her four years. Harvey still owns six school records. She is a sales executive for Black Girl Sunscreen and lives in Richardson, Texas.

John Helgerson, a 2011 graduate, was a four-year member of the wrestling program. He was a three-time All-American, and won the National Championship in 2011 at 285 lbs. Helgerson was a two-time Iowa Conference champion, and finished his career with 111 wins and 25 falls. His 42 wins in 2010-11 ranks third on the single season leader list. He placed fifth at the prestigious Midlands Championships in 2010, and competed at the 2012 US Olympic Trials. Helgerson is a home mortgage consultant for Wells Fargo and resides in Newton, Iowa, with his wife, Caitlyn.

Steve Johnson, was the head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach for the Knights from 1989-2016. He is a nine-time Central Region Coach of the Year by the United Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), and was named the National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2012. For cross country, Johnson earned nine Conference Coach of the Year honors for the men's team and 16 for the women. The 2008, 2012, and 2013 women's cross country and track and field programs earned the prestigious Deb Vercauteren Program of the Year honors. In his tenure, Wartburg cross country won 25 Iowa Conference and 12 NCAA Central Region cross country team titles and sent more teams to the national championships than any other Iowa college or university during that time span. The 2012 women's cross country team finished as the National Runner-Up which marked a new best for the program as it previously placed as high as third three times in 1991, 1992 and 2002. The men's cross country team has four top-ten national meet finishes in his tenure, and placed as high as fifth in 2003. Johnson coached 140 All-Americans in cross country and track and field, which included eight different individual National Champions. He coached Missy (Buttry) Rock, who placed eighth at the 2004 US Olympic Trials and competed on two USA World Championship cross country teams. Johnson retired from Wartburg in 2016, and resides in Cedar Falls, Iowa, with his wife, Linda.

Samantha (Harrington) McCarville, a 2011 graduate, was a four-year member of the women's basketball program. She was named First-team All-Region her senior year in addition to being tabbed the Iowa Conference MVP that same season. McCarville was a three-time All-Conference honoree, and ranks in the top 10 of seven career categories, which includes No. 2 in three-point field goals (217). She scored 1,263 points in 103 games, and is one of only 17 members of the 1,000 career point club. McCarville is a production control manager for Donaldson and lives in Cresco, Iowa.

Patrick Smith, a 2003 graduate, was a four-year member of the baseball team. He was a two-time All-Region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and a three-time All-Conference honoree as a pitcher. Smith ranks in the top 10 of six career categories and is the career leader in wins (29) and appearances (66). The Knights won four Iowa Conference Championships during his career, as he was a part of the "Decade of Dominance". Wartburg also made four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and the 2000 team advanced to the College World Series. He is a senior vice president with First National Bank and resides in Dike, Iowa, with his wife, Jamie (Garbes '03), and their four daughters.

Byron Tate, a 2012 graduate, was a four-year member of the wrestling program. He was a three-time National Champion at 197 lbs., and a three-time Iowa Conference Champion. Tate was named the D3wrestle.com wrestler of the year in 2012, and was the conference MVP in 2011. He ranks second on the career wins list (141) and sixth on the career falls list (44). Wartburg won the team National Championship in 2011 and 2012. He was the runner up at the prestigious Midlands Championships in 2010, and was invited to the Division I All-Star Dual in 2011. Tate works at McComas Lacina Construction and is a wrestling coach at Iowa City West High School. He resides in Iowa City, Iowa with his wife, Whitney, and three sons, Briggs, Bishop, and Banks.

Jeff Voreis, a 2004 graduate, was a four-year member of the football team as an offensive lineman. He was an All-American for the 2003 season, a two-time All-Region selection, and a three-time All-Conference honoree. Wartburg won the conference championship in 2002 and 2003, to make consecutive appearances in the NCAA Playoffs. Voreis is an assistant vice president at Cambridge Investment Research, Inc. and lives in Fairfield, Iowa, with his wife Erica ('04).
