Baseball Falls Short Against Simpson in Both Games of Doubleheader

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Baseball fell to Simpson in both games of an American Rivers Conference doubleheader, the Storm won 14-10 in game one and 7-0 in game two. Wartburg is now 8-15 overall and 3-11 in A-R-C play.
 
Game Summary
  • Game One
    • Simpson came out with hot bats in game one and put up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning
    • The Storm added two more runs in the second to take a 9-0 lead after two innings played
    • Both Eliot Jurgensen and Carter Stubitz walked with the bases loaded in the third inning to cut the lead to 9-2
    • Will Armstrong, Keaton Gray and Caleb Andrews all got on base in the top of the fourth to set up a grand slam to right-center field from Zach Walton that made the score 9-6
      • Simpson got one run back in the bottom of the fourth and the score was 10-6 after four innings
    • After a hitless fifth inning, Wartburg scored another run in the top of the sixth when a Sam Nicolino infield single scored Gray
    • The Knights added two more runs in the top of the seventh after an RBI from both Andrews and Gray to bring Wartburg within one run
    • Joey Ciero pitched two innings in relief and recorded four strikeouts going into the eighth inning with the score still 10-9
    • Carter Stubitz and Cole Wessling hit back-to-back two-out doubles to tie the game at 10 after the top of the eighth
    • It didn't take Simpson long to answer as they brought four runs across in the bottom f the eighth to take a 14-10 lead heading to the final inning
    • Simpson held on to win game one 14-10
  • Game Two
    • Simpson got on the board early again in game two with a 1-0 lead after the first inning
    • The Knights recorded four hits in the first three innings, but stranded five runners and the score remained 1-0 after three innings
    • Wartburg was held hitless the next two innings and then Simpson's offense came alive for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead
    • The Storm added another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-0 after
    • Simpson scored three more runs in the seventh inning to stretch the lead to 7-0 heading to the final two innings
    • Jurgensen hit an RBI single to bring the Knights first run across and Wartburg added two more in the inning capped off by a Stubitz RBI double
      • Score was 7-3 headed to the ninth
    • Walton doubled down the left field line with the bases loaded to make the score 7-6 with zero outs in the top of the ninth
    • After a pitching change the Storm put Wartburg down 1-2-3 to hold on for a 7-6 win
