Knights Sweep Doubleheader in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. – Baseball took both games in a doubleheader on the road against Nebraska Wesleyan University on Thursday, May 4. The Knights won game one 9-2 and then rallied for four runs in the ninth in game two to win 9-5. Wartburg is now 14-18 overall and 9-14 in American Rivers Conference play heading into the final game of the regular season.
 
Game Summary
  • Game One
    • NWU got on the board with a bloop single to right field to go up 1-0 after one inning
    • Eliot Jurgensen had an answer for the Knights in the top of the second with a solo-shot homerun to left field to tie the game at one
    • The Knights homered again in the third, this time a solo homerun to left-center field from Zach Walton to make it 2-1
      • Nebraska Wesleyan tied it back up in the bottom of the third
    • Zach Wesolowski doubled in the fifth to start a two out rally that loaded the bases and led to two runs being walked in before NWU got out of the jam
      • Knights led 4-2 after four innings
    • The score remained 4-2 Wartburg after six innings
    • Cole Wessling and Will Armstrong both hit RBI singles in the seventh to push the lead to 6-2
      • Walton walked with the bases loaded to add another run and then Wesolowski singled to score two more runs that made the score 9-2 through the seventh
    • The Knights closed out a dominant 9-2 win
  • Game Two
    • Walton hit an RBI single that scored Keaton Gray and then Jurgensen hit a two RBI double that gave the Knights an early 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning
    • Max Hansen got out of a small jam with runners on the corners in the second inning and the score remained 3-0
    • Carter Stubitz and Wessling both singled in the fourth inning, but were left stranded to keep the score at 3-0 through three and half innings
    • A fielder's choice from Wesolowski scored Gray in the fifth inning to make it 4-0 after he recorded his second hit of the game
      • NWU answered in the bottom of the fifth with its first run of the game to make the score 4-1
    • After a scoreless sixth, Nebraska Welseyan plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4
    • Jurgensen continued his great day at the plate with a triple in the eighth before he was brought home by a Stubitz sacrifice fly to put Wartburg back up 5-4
      • In the bottom half of the inning the Knights escaped a bases loaded jam, but not before one run scored to tie the game at 5-5
    • The Knights loaded the bases in the ninth after Gray, Caleb Andrews and Wesolowski all walked before a Sam Nicolino single scored two runs
      • Drew Conrad scored on a wild pitch and Nicolino scored on a sacrifice fly from Wessling to make it 9-5 heading to the final frame
    • Armstrong closed out NWU on the mound to secure a 9-5 win
