Wartburg drops final game to Kalamazoo College in Jacksonville, Ill.

JACKSONVILLE, Illinois – Baseball fell to Kalamazoo College 13-5, Sunday afternoon in the final of three games in Jacksonville, Illinois. The Knights move to 8-2 on the season.  
 
Game Summary 

  • First Inning 
    • Eliot Jurgensen picked up right where he left off with a solo home run to put the Knights up one early 
    • Kalamazoo answered the early score with a run of their own to tie it at one 
  • Second Inning 
    • The Hornets scored five runs in the bottom half of the second and took a 6-1 lead 
  • Third Inning 
    • Kalamazoo added two more runs to their total to extend their lead to seven 
  • Fourth Inning 
    • Sam Nicolino launched a two-run home run over the right-field wall that brought Carter Stubitz across the plate to cut the deficit to five 
    • The Hornets responded with two more runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth 
  • Fifth Inning 
    • Kalamazoo continued the scoring with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 12-3 
  • Sixth Inning 
    • The Hornets add another run to extend their lead to 10 in the bottom half of the sixth 
  • Seventh Inning 
    • Jurgensen connected on his second home run of the game with a two-run shot to cut the deficit to eight 
  • Ninth Inning 
    • No score over the final two innings as Kalamazoo won 13-5

Coaches Comments
Head Coach Casey Klunder began his postseason thoughts with praise for Jurgensen's big weekend at the plate, "Really happy for Eliot, he saw it well all weekend, those are games he will remember for a long time"

He also spoke about Walton's hitting this weekend, "Zach gives you a great at-bat, he's physically talented but he also locks in mentally, he has a good plan at the plate"

"Overall pleased with the weekend but we didn't execute the way needed to in order to compete with a team of Kalamazoos caliber", Klunder continued about this weekend's performance.
 
Klunder closed his statement exited for next weekend's home opener at Harms Stadium at Hertel Field, "Looking forward to the home opener next week and it will be awesome to recognize our local first responders".

  • Walton is now T-6 all-time in career home runs with 19  
     

Next Time Out 
The Knights are back in action next weekend March 16-17 for their home opener against St. Olaf.
