DECORAH – Goals from freshman forward Anna Aquino (Bettendorf) and freshman midfielder Rachel Torry (Urbandale) lifted Wartburg’s women’s soccer squad to a key 2-1 Iowa Conference road win at Luther Oct. 2.
Aquino’s score, happening in the 43rd minute, gave coach Sara Johnson’s squad a 1-0 halftime lead. Torry didn’t wait long in the second half to up the margin to 2-0, tallying her first collegiate goal and the eventual game winner just over nine minutes in. Wartburg (6-3-1 overall, 2-0 IIAC) held a 14-12 overall and 10-4 shots on goal advantage.
In the nightcap, coach Kirk Artist’s men’s squad kept itself perfect in conference play with a 2-1 victory over the Norse.
The duo of senior midfielder Josh Palmer (Dubuque)and sophomore forward Brandon Cook (Bondurant)scored the goals. Palmer’s first of the season occurred in the 27th minute, while Cook’s third and the game winner, came in the 67th minute. Wartburg (5-4 overall, 2-0 IIAC) overcame an 11-8 total shots deficit, as senior goalkeeper Brandon Busbee (Hiawatha) recorded three saves.
Wartburg resumes league action Tuesday, Oct. 5, when Coe College of Cedar Rapids visits the campus soccer complex for 5 and 7 p.m. matches.
