WAVERLY – Wartburg College put four players in double figures Dec. 1 en route to a 64-46 win over Cornell.
The Knights, upping their overall record to 5-0, took advantage of a 13-1 run midway through the first half to hold the lead for good. Coach Bob Amsberry’s squad increased the lead to as much as 26 in the second half.
Senior center Katie Zittergruen (Van Horne) topped the Orange and Black with 17 points. Junior guard Stephanie Reiter (LaPorte City) had a big effort from outside the arc, canning five-of-seven attempts, for 15 points to go with five assists and two steals. Junior forward Terri Dirks (Monticello) came off the bench with 13 points, and senior guard Samantha Harrington (Nashua) chipped in 10 points and seven assists.
Sophomore guard Renee Tzeo led the Rams (4-2, 0-1 IIAC) with 10 points.
Amsberry’s crew continues league play with a trip to Central College’s Kuyper Gymnasium Saturday, Dec. 4. Game time is 2 p.m.
NOTES – Other key numbers for the Knights came from junior forward Leslie Wilson (Austin, Minn.) (three steals) and junior forward Kelsey Teubel (Mount Vernon) (nine rebounds and a blocked shot). … Wartburg’s defense, which was allowing a league-low 53.5 ppg, dropped their season average down a point and a half and is surrendering only 52 per game through five contests. The Knights allowed Cornell to hit only 25.9 percent from the field in the second half. They held Cornell sophomore center Camille Marie-Lidd, who led the league in overall game scoring coming in, to 13.4 points per game below her current average. … Wartburg also held a 37-24 rebounding edge.
