WAVERLY – A 36-8 run to open the game lifted Wartburg College to the championship of its AmericInn Holiday Tournament Dec. 30.

Coach Bob Amsberry’s team hit eight of its first nine shots and stifled UW-Stout with its patented defense en route to an 87-59 win. The win moved the Knights to 12-0.

The home team put three players in double figures. Sophomore guard Maddie Sadecky (Iowa City)scored 13 points to pace them and also pulled down six rebounds, as part of a 43-32 edge on the board, and blocked a Blue Devil shot. Senior guard Samantha Harrington (Nashua), registering her 10th straight double-figure scoring game, scored 12 points and picked up three steals. Freshman guard Carly Jacobs added 10 points and was perfect from the field (four-for-four) and beyond the arc (two-of-two) to go with four assists.

Harrington’s afternoon put her into tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Sadecky joined her on the all-tournament team, as did junior forward Leslie Wilson (Austin, Minn.), who ended with nine points and eight rebounds. UW-Stout, despite dipping to 5-7, placed Whitney Rawdon on the all-tournament squad. She co-led the Blue Devils with eight points along with Amy Van Hulzen.

Northwestern College of St. Paul, Minn., claimed the consolation title with an 81-38 victory over Principia College of Illinois. The Eagles received 19 points and five three-pointers from Mollie Sir and 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots from Katie DeWitt to lead the way. Both players earned all-tournament awards.
