WAVERLY – Spurred on by a 25-9 start, Wartburg College took a 77-52 Iowa Conference victory over Central Jan. 26.
The Knights (16-3, 7-3 IIAC) needed to repel a run by the Dutch in the late stages of the first half, as the visitors trimmed the lead to 30-24. An 11-2 stretch over the final 3:04 plus the first 1:23 of the second half pushed the advantage back to 13, and the home team didn’t look back.
Twelve players scored the Orange and Black. Senior guard Samantha Harrington (Nashua) led the charge with 12 points to go along with four assists and six rebounds, and freshman guard Carly Jacobs tallied 10 points, three steals and three assists. Freshman forward Laura Hempen (Clarksville)was next in line with nine points.
Coach Bob Amsberry’s team increased its 2010-11 home record to 10-1 by winning the program’s 19th game in the last 22 inside Levick Arena. The Knights return to league play Saturday, Jan. 29, with a 2 p.m. tipoff at Cornell College’s Small Multi-Sport Center in Mount Vernon.
NOTES – Harrington’s 12-point night helped her attain personal history. She rose to number nine on Wartburg’s all-time scoring list with 1,151 points. Her four three-pointers also moved her to career thre-pointer total to 201. … Jacobs’ double-digit outing was her fourth of the season.
