Late rally sends Knights to win

Boxscore

MOUNT VERNON – The guard combination of senior Samantha Harrington (Nashua) and freshman Carly Jacobs produced double-figure finishes for Wartburg College in a 60-52 win at Cornell Jan. 29.

Harrington, who recently entered the program’s top 10 in career scoring, continued that theme with 13 points and a seven-of-eight outing at the charity stripe. Jacobs, completing a 22-point week, was tough on the Rams’ defense from the field, hitting on four-of-five attempts overall and going two-for-two from outside the arc for 12 points. Other big numbers for Coach Bob Amsberry’s team (17-3 overall, 8-3 IIAC) came from junior forward Emily Timmermans (Vinton) (six rebounds), junior guard Stephanie Reiter (LaPorte City) (four assists) and senior forward Abbey Hempen (Clarksville) (two steals).

Cornell (7-11 overall, 2-9 IIAC) made things tough on the Orange and Black. After surrendering an 18-7 deficit less than 10 minutes, the host team began to chip away and eventually took their own lead, building it to as much as three (52-49) with 3:04 left. From that point, the Knights took off on a 12-0 run for the win.

Wartburg resumes league play Wednesday, Feb. 2, with a 6 p.m. tip-off at Luther College’s Regents Center in Decorah.

NOTES – Harrington takes a string of three consecutive double-figure point games to Luther.  … Timmermans has recorded four-or-more rebounds in nine consecutive contests.
