WAVERLY, Iowa—In the Championship game of its annual Holiday Tournament, the Wartburg women’s basketball team fell 47-37 to tenth-ranked Washington University-St. Louis Friday afternoon.

The score of the first half was tied four times and was knotted 13 all at halftime.

The Bears led by as many as five points in the first six minutes of the game, but the Knights erased the margin on a 5-0 run of their own. WashU had a margin of four points with 3:22 remaining in the frame but Wartburg answered with a 4-0 run over that time span to even the score at the break.

The Bears outscored the Knights 34-24 in the second half and started the stanza on an 8-0 run over the first 6:30 of the half.

WashU increased its margin to 14 points twice in the duration of the game and for the last time with 2:59 remaining. The Knights chipped away at the spread and came within seven with 18 seconds to go.

The Bears made three of four free throws down the stretch to win the Championship game.

Junior Abi Weidemann (Iowa Falls) led Wartburg with 12 points and senior Terri Dirks (Monticello) pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds on the game.

WashU also only had one player in double-digits as Dani Hoover, the tournament’s MVP, had 15 points in Friday’s game.

For their efforts in the tournament, Weidemann and senior Stephanie Reiter (Buckingham) were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Knights return to the court Wednesday when they host Iowa Conference opponent, Central, at 6 p.m.
