Knights win sixth straight

Boxscore

DUBUQUE – Fueled by a balanced offensive attack, Wartburg College claimed an Iowa Conference road win over the University of Dubuque Feb. 16.

Sophomore guard Abi Weidemann (Iowa Falls) posted 14 points, due in large part to an eight-for-eight effort at the charity stripe, and senior guard Samantha Harrington (Nashua) added 11 during the Knights; 70-47 win over the Spartans. Freshman forward Rachel Leitz (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), was also in double figures with 12 points. Other key boxscore numbers went to Harrington (six rebounds), freshman guard Carly Jacobs of Allison (three assists and two steals), and junior forward Emily Timmermans (Vinton) (seven rebounds).

Coach Bob Amsberry’s team, improving to 21-3 overall and 12-3 in the league, received offensive highlights from several spots, as 10 players scored. Wartburg scored 18 of the game’s first 27 points and never looked back.

The Orange and Black, locking up the third seed in the 2011 IIAC postseason tournament with its sixth consecutive win, closes the regular campaign with a 2 p.m. tip-off at Loras College’s Athletic Wellness Center in Dubuque Saturday, Feb. 19. Postseason tourney pairings are announced later that evening.

NOTES: Harrington’s 1,226 career points have her among the top 10 in all-time scoring. She is 12 points shy of a third straight 300-point plus season and takes a run of seven straight double-figure scoring games to Loras Saturday. … Weidemann’s 14 points marked her sixth double-figure scoring game of the year and first since a home win over Luther in mid-January. … Timmermans continues to be a force on the glass. She’s recorded four-or-more rebounds in 13 consecutive games.
