Knights Lose Overtime Thriller 56-55 to Pioneers

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg women's basketball team (2-3 overall) fell in an overtime thriller 56-55 to nonconference opponent, Grinnell (3-2) Sunday afternoon.

The Knights took the 18-11 lead at halftime but were outscored 32-25 in the second frame.

Grinnell's Cristal Coleman made a three-pointer with 1.7 seconds to play to knot the score at 43 to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, junior Carly Jacobs (Greene) made a trey with 3:51 remaining to give the Orange and Black the three-point margin.

A Pioneer basket at 2:26 sliced the margin to one but senior Cathy Reiter (Buckingham) answered with a three-point basket at 2:12 to regain the four-point lead.

Wartburg led by four for the last time with 34 seconds remaining as sophomore Allison Emrich (Vinton) made both of her free throws.

Grinnell made a trey with 26 left on the clock to cut the Knights' margin to one.

The Orange and Black missed two free throw attempts down the stretch and the Pioneers hit the game-winning shot with three seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Wartburg was unable to run a final play with 1.7 seconds remaning on the game clock.

Senior Baileigh O'Brien (Fort Dodge) recorded her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and a career-best 11 rebounds.

Jacobs led the team with 12 points.

The Knights return to the court Tuesday when they host Bethany Lutheran at 7 p.m.
