MOUNT VERNON, Iowa—The Wartburg College women’s basketball team (16-5 overall, 9-3 IIAC) defeated Cornell College (7-11, 5-6) 69-63 Wednesday night at the Multi-Sport Center.
Three Knights finished in double digits in the victory as junior Abi Weidemann (Iowa Falls) led all players with her 16 points. She also made 10 free throws on the night, just one shy of her career mark.
Seniors Stephanie Reiter (Buckingham) and Terri Dirks (Monticello) completed the scoring leader trio with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Classmate Leslie Wilson (Austin, Minn.) had a team-best eight rebounds on the night.
The Orange and Black led 36-15 at the break and were ahead by as many as 23 points in the half. The Rams cut the margin to single digits (62-53) with 2:49 remaining in the second frame.
Cornell pulled within seven with 20 seconds to go, but was not able to overcome Wartburg’s lead.
The Knights’ defense recorded a season-high eight blocks on the night.
The Orange and Black are off from competition this weekend and return to action next Wednesday against Dubuque at 6 p.m.
