Knights Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime to Dutch

PELLA, Iowa—Iowa Conference opponent, Central (7-18 overall, 2-14 IIAC) narrowly edged out Wartburg (17-8, 10-6) 83-82 in overtime Saturday afternoon.

The Knights led 40-30 at halftime, but a strong second-half effort by the Dutch sent the game into overtime. Three consecutive Central treys whittled the margin to two points with 1:12 remaining in regulation. The Dutch made their two free throws down the stretch to tie the game at 71-71 and sent it into overtime.

In the extra session, the score was tied at 80-80 with 0:31 to go. Wartburg made its two free throws to take the two-point lead (82-80) with five seconds left on the clock.

The Dutch brought the ball up the floor and AJ Baker's buzzer beater three-point shot sealed the win.

Seniors Stephanie Reiter (Buckingham) and Leslie Wilson (Austin, Minn.) led the Orange and Black with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Reiter tied the single-game school record with her seven three-point field goals.

Classmate Terri Dirks (Monticello) and junior Abi Weidemann (Iowa Falls) joined them in double digits with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Dirks narrowly missed a double-double as she had a team-high nine rebounds on the game.

As a team, Wartburg held the advantages in field goal percentage (.518-.443) and three-point field goal percentage (.524-.433).

The Knights open post-season play Tuesday when they host Loras at 7 p.m. in the first-round of the Iowa Conference tournament.
