INDIANOLA, Iowa—In the Iowa Conference Tournament Semifinals, the Wartburg women’s basketball team (18-9 overall) fell by only three points to top-seed Simpson (21-5) 66-63 Thursday night.
Junior Abi Weidemann (Iowa Falls) tallied a career-high 22 points on the game and senior Leslie Wilson (Austin, Minn.) joined her in double digits with 16.
Wilson led the team on the glass with her eight rebounds.
Neither team led by more than single digits in the first half as the Storm took the 33-30 lead at the break on a last second three-pointer.
In the second stanza, the Knights opened on a 15-5 run over the first six minutes to take the six point lead (44-38).
The Orange and Black built their margin to as many as seven (61-54) with 4:08 to go.
Simpson knotted the score at 63 all with 2:11 left and took the two point lead (65-63) with 1:39 remaining.
To get the ball back, Wartburg fouled with 0:12 left and the Storm made one of their two free throw attempts.
The Knights brought the ball back up the floor and attempted a last-second three-point attempt that was unfortunately blocked to give Simpson the win.
The Orange and Black will now await Monday’s selection show to see if they earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
