No. 8/14 Wartburg Defeats Upper Iowa, 74-62 in Charity Exhibition

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 8/16 Wartburg women's basketball team defeated Upper Iowa 74-62 in a charity exhibition game Thursday. Upper Iowa competes in NCAA Division II. All funds raised tonight will be donated to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief.



Senior Miranda Murphy (Alleman) led all scorers with 21 points and nine rebounds. Classmates Kristie and Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) joined her in double digits with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

The Peacocks led for the only time in the game at 9-6 with 5:24 left in the first. Kristie Sommer gave the Knights the lead for good as she made all three of her free throws to make it 12-9.

The Orange and Black led 42-30 at halftime.

UIU came within two at 59-57 with 3:37 to play. The Peacocks sliced the margin to two on a layup with 2:55 to go, but Kristie Sommer responded with a trey to give Wartburg the six point lead with 2:33 remaining.

The Knights made nine of ten free throws down the stretch to seal the exhibition win.
