No. 4/11 Wartburg Hosts Annual Holiday Tournament

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 4/11 Wartburg women's basketball team (9-0 overall) hosts its annual Holiday Tournament Friday and Saturday. The field features three Top 25 teams.

Friday, Dec. 29
2 p.m.    No. 4/11 Wartburg vs. UW-Superior
4 p.m.    No. 11/17 UW-Whitewater vs. No. 17/19 Gustavus

Saturday, Dec. 30
1 p.m.    Consolation Game
3 p.m.    Championship Game
An All-Tournament team will be announced following the championship game.

The Series
Wartburg owns the all-time series lead at 1-0 over UW-Superior. The only meeting occurred in 2008 at this annual Holiday Tournament, where the Knights won 76-67.

The Gusties hold the narrow lead at 9-8, though the programs have not met since 2010. The Warhawks own the series lead at 3-1, and the last meeting was in November off 2012.

Wartburg
Senior Miranda Murphy (Alleman) leads the team with 12.3 PPG and 5.1 rebounds/game. Classmate Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) follows at 10.6 PPG and has a team-high 53 assists. Sommer and junior Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) co-lead the team with 17 steals.

Career Leader List Watch
Katie ranks 11th with 1,064 points, second with 403 assists, seventh with 134 three-point field goals, and third with 340 free throws.

Twin sister Kristie ranks third with 190 three-point field goals.

Senior Aryn Jones (Marion) ranks fourth with 85 blocked shots.

UW-Superior (8-2)
The Yellowjackets enter the weekend on a six-game winning streak. Hailey Kontny leads the team with 16.6 PPG and Hannah Norlin has 11.0 PPG and 7.6 rebounds/game.

No. 11/17 UW-Whitewater (9-0)
The Warhawks also have two players in double digits as Brooke Trewyn and Malia Smith have 12.6 and 10.4 PPG, respectively.

No. 17/19 Gustavus (8-1)
Mikayla Miller leads the team at 18.1 PPG, while Miranda Rice and Kendall Thompson follow at 17.1 and 10.4 PPG, respectively.
