WAVERLY, Iowa-- Junior Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) led all scorers with 21 points in No. 10/10 Wartburg's (23-2 overall, 15-1 IIAC) 83-70 win over Buena Vista (13-12, 9-7) Saturday. All seven of her baskets were for three points, which was just one shy of the single-game school record which she set last season. With her effort, she broke the old single-season school record in three-point field goals (73 set by Stephanie Reiter in 2011-12) as Kristie has 78 to date.
Sommer wasn't done adding her name to record books as she also broke the Iowa Conference's single-season mark for treys with 57. The old record was 52 set by Ashley Reynolds of Buena Vista in 1998-99 and Jessica Cox of Dubuque in 2002-03.
Wartburg moved its winning streak to eight with the victory.
The Knights completed the season sweep of BV and their 15 IIAC wins tied for third-best in program history: 18 in 2000-01, 17 in 1998-99 and 15 in 1997-98. With today's victory, Wartburg has tied its win total from last year.
Three fellow Knights joined her in double digits as twin sister Katie had 18, classmate Morgan Neuendorf (Shell Rock) had 11 and freshman Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) had 10.
Gerdes, Neuendorf and junior Miranda Murphy (Alleman) all led the team with six rebounds.
The Orange and Black were down 12-3 just five minutes into the first quarter. Wartburg then responded with a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half. The score was tied at 19 all with nine seconds to play in the frame, but Katie Sommer gave the Knights the lead for good with her made free throw.
The Orange and Black began to build their lead in the second quarter as they outscored Buena Vista 25-15 and led by as many as 17 in the second half.
Wartburg owned the team advantages in all three shooting percentage categories, rebounds (39-27) which included 12 on the offensive end.
The Knights have won the regular season conference championship and thus are the top seed for the conference tournament which begins next Tuesday. The Orange and Black have the first-round bye and will host a to-be-determined opponent Thursday at 7 p.m.
