INDIANOLA, Iowa-- The No. 2/6 Wartburg women's basketball team set the program record for best start, improving to 15-0 with the 81-66 win over Simpson Saturday.
Senior Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) led all scorers with 26 points, just one point shy of her career mark. She also had six treys, which was two shy of the single-game school record. Sommer added seven assists and was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
Classmate Aryn Jones (Marion) had 17 points and co-led the team with five rebounds. She was also a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.
Senior Morgan Neuendorf (Plainfield) had 13 points and classmate Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) had 11 to complete the leading scorers.
Sophomore Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) matched Jones' rebound total.
The Knights led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Storm brought it within one at 24-23 with 6:03 left in the second quarter. The Orange and Black answered with consecutive three-point field goals to push the margin back to seven over the next minute.
Once Wartburg took the 47-37 lead with 6:31 to go in the third, it maintained a double-digit lead for the duration of the game.
The Knights forced 25 turnovers by the Storm, led in blocks (6-3), steals (15-8), field goal percentage (.435 vs. .418), and three-point field goal percentage (.393 vs. .267).
The Orange and Black return to the court Monday when they host Buena Vista at 6 p.m.
