Strong Third Quarter Propels No. 15/16 Knights Past Norse

DECORAH, Iowa-- The No. 15/16 Wartburg women's basketball team (19-3 overall, 12-1 American Rivers) used a 27-point scoring effort in the third quarter en route to its 64-39 win over Luther (9-11, 8-5). The Norse have now lost their last three-straight and this was the lowest point total of the season. The last time the Norse were held under 40 points was Dec. 31, 2011 in a 74-38 loss to Calvin.

This also marked the lowest point total by Luther in the series between the programs since Wartburg's 88-21 victory on Feb. 4, 1984 in Waverly.

Sophomore Tori Hazard (Janesville) recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Junior Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) also finished with 12 points, and senior Adrienne Boettger (Cedar Falls) rounded out those in double digits with 11.

With the victory, the Knights moved their winning streak to eight.

The Orange and Black opened the game on a 4-0 run over the first three minutes until the Norse compiled a 9-0 run over the next 3:30. Hazard recorded a 4-0 run by herself as she made all four free throws to slice the margin to one (9-8) with 1:49 to play in the first.

Luther led 13-10 at the end of the first but Wartburg outscored them 8-4 in the second to take the slim 18-17 lead into halftime. The Norse went the last 7:30 of the second quarter without a basket.

The lead changed hands four times in the first three minutes of the third quarter, until the Knights pushed the margin to nine on three treys and a layup from sophomore Ally Conrad (Cedar Falls). The Orange and Black would begin to build a double digit margin (14) later on another three-pointer from Conrad and two free throws from junior Amanda Brainerd (DeWitt) with 1:28 to play in the frame.

Wartburg continued to lead by double figures for the entire fourth quarter and led by as many as 25 points.

The Knights owned the team advantages in all three shooting percentage categories, rebounds (44-23), assists (16-7), and blocks (5-0). Defensively, the Orange and Black held the Norse to 8.7% from beyond the arc.

Wartburg returns to the court Saturday when it hosts Nebraska Wesleyan at 2 p.m. The annual Parent's Day and Senior Day presentations will occur at before the game.
