Wartburg Wraps Up First Outdoor Meet Since 2019

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Wartburg men's and women's track & field team competed in its second outdoor meet of the 2021 season April 10, hosting its first meet at Walston-Hoover Stadium since 2019.

The Knights swept the field, with the men's team taking first of six teams with 275 points. The women totaled 280.5 points for first place team finish.

Wartburg went without an outdoor meet in 2020 due to the outdoor portion of the schedule canceled due to COVID-19. The Knights hosted American Rivers Conference members Central, Loras, and Simpson, along with the University of Northern Iowa and Upper Iowa University.

The Orange & Black men's tallied seven top finishes as a squad.

Sprinters Derrick Smith and Dallas Wright won the 200-meter dash (21.76) and 110-meter hurdles (14.84), respectively, both Wartburg outdoor top 10 times.

Smith and Wright also contributed to a first place 4x100-meter relay time of 41.70 with teammates Riley Nolan and Randy Williams. The group's time of 41.49 last week at the Loras Invite ranks first in Division III.

Dalton Martin won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:54.45 and Curren Matthias took first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:30.88 - a Wartburg top 10 time.

Aizik Hodak and Nolan led the Knights' throwers. Hodak earned a first place discus throw of 153 feet, and Nolan in the javelin with a throw of 133-8.

The Wartburg women totaled five first place finishes.

Aubrie Fisher headlined the women's performance, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:00.80, the second fastest time in Wartburg history.

The jumpers collected four top finishes, led by Breya Christopher's first place high jump (5-4.25) and triple jump (36-2.75).

Isabelle Albers won the pole vault at 9-6.25 and Darian Wegner won the long jump at 16-9.25.

Throwers Tara Jochumsen and Nicki Schneider also took home top finishes. Jochumsen won the discus throw with a toss of 126-10 and Schneider in the javelin throw at 116-10.

Up next, Wartburg heads to Rock Island, Ill. next Saturday, April 17 to compete in the Augustana College 'Meet of Champions.'
