WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College men's and women's track & field teams hosted their second home outdoor meet of the 2021 season April 30, with the men winning and the women taking second during the Wartburg Outdoor Friday Night Lights meet.
Freshman sprinter
Deyton Love highlighted the Knights' competition, breaking the Wartburg outdoor 110-meter hurdle record with a time of 14.44. Love's time bests the previous Wartburg record holder Russel Harris' time of 14.46, set in 2010.
The men totaled 243 team points, finishing ahead of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Loras, UW-La Crosse, and UW-Oshkosh.
Fellow sprinters
Dallas Wright and
Derrick Smith also made their marks on the Wartburg outdoor record book. Wright won the 400-meter dash with the second-best time at Wartburg at 47.39, while Smith's 200-meter dash time of 21.64 is the third-fastest in Wartburg history.
Distance runners
Matt Heinzman and
Christopher Collet turned in strong distance runners. Heinzman won the 1,500-meter run, earning the third-best time in the Wartburg outdoor record book at 3:50.15. Collet cracked the top-5 at Wartburg in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a first place time of 9:08.21.
Trent Allard led the jumpers with a first place high jump of six feet, five inches.
Wyatt Schmidt also took first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.22 and
Samuel Schmitz capped off the night with a first place 10,000-meter run time of 31:18.61.
The Wartburg women took second of five teams with 170.25 points. Wisconsin-La Crosse brought home first place with 217.25 team points.
Jackie Ganshirt recorded the Knights' first top finish of the day, setting a personal best in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.60.
Dani Johnson and
Ellie Roquet led the Wartburg throwers. Johnson took second in the hammer throw with a 164-6, the second-best in Wartburg outdoor history.
Ellie Roquet won the javelin at 127-8, a personal best throw.
Haley Beminio and
Lily Meester both took third to combine for 12 points; Beminio in the shot put (41-2.25), and Meester in the discus (139-5).
Additionally,
Carson McSorley was a runner-up in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.55.
Up Next, Wartburg hosts a dual meet versus Luther College this upcoming Thursday, May 6 at Walston-Hoover Stadium. The meet will begin with field events at 4 p.m.
