INDIANOLA – Sophomore forward Kaylee Benning's (Waverly) fifth goal of the season was the difference for Wartburg College Oct. 30.
Benning, taking a pass from junior defender Jess Macauley (Cedar Rapids), placed the ball in the Simpson net for the eventual game-winning goal in a 2-1 Knights’ victory. She wasn’t the only offensive hero for coach Sara Johnson’s squad, as junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf) continued her impressive campaign with a penalty kick goal in the 35th minute.
Wartburg (13-4-1 overall, 7-1 IIAC) out-shot its hosts 11-7. Benning and Wendt topped the individual shots chart with three each.
Sophomore goalkeeper Monica Noti (Carol Stream, Ill.), nearly gained her fourth shutout. Simpson broke through with a score in the 53rd minute.
The Knights have the second seed for the Iowa Conference’s postseason next weekend to Loras College’s Rock Bowl in Dubuque.
Notes – Benning’s goal was her third game-winner of the year. … Wendt has posted goals in five of her last six matches.
