Women's soccer opens IIACs Friday

2010 IIAC Championships – Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5 and 6 – Rock Bowl Stadium – Loras College campus – Dubuque

Knights notes:

Coach Sara Johnson’s squad (13-4-1) ended second on the 2010 IIAC regular season standings with a 7-1 record. … They take the second seed into this weekend’s tourney. The Orange and Black face third-seeded Dubuque at 11 a.m. Friday in one of two semifinals. … In the first contest, the two sides needed two extra sessions to decide an outcome with the Knights winning 3-2. … The last two times Wartburg reached the semifinals, it was positive outcomes. In 2007, they won the league tournament title at this weekend’s venue, while in 2008, they reached the finals and were defeated by Loras in Waverly. … Johnson’s squad, ranked No. 4 on this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association Division III North Region poll, has won six straight and eight of its last nine. … Junior midfielder Katy Wendt of Bettendorf continues to lead the offense. She has 15 goals, eight assists, 38 points, 70 shots and five game-winning goals, each of which are first for Wartburg. Junior forward Chelsea Frye of Waverly and sophomore midfielder Kaylee Benning of Waverly are second and third in goals (six/five), while Benning is second in shots (35) and game-winning goals (three), and freshman Anna Aquino of Bettendorf and junior midfielder Taylor Vermie of Cedar Rapids are tied for second in assists (four). … The Knights’ “O” is second in the conference in goals (47) and first in goals per game (2.58). Wendt, the league points, points per game, goals and goals per game leader, is a big reason. … Wendt’s numbers rank in the top 50 of NCAA Division III for total points (44th), points per game (47th – 2.24) and goals per game (50th - .882). … Wendt has registered goals in five of her last six matches. Frye has done so in four of her last six appearances. … Wendt was one of two Knights’ honored for their academic success by CoSida (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America)/ESPN. She and sophomore defender Lindsey Boyke of Verona, Wis., were named academic all-district VII Nov. 2. Wendt, a first team selection, moves on to the national ballot for academic All-American consideration, while Boyke was a third team honoree.
