Kappmeyer lettered four years each in basketball and baseball, starting every game in both sports and serving as captain of both teams during his senior year.
He was the Knights' leading scorer in basketball his senior year and the leading hitter on the baseball team throughout his career
After graduation and service in World War II, he coached high school sports at Oneida, Tripoli, West Union, and Fort Madison in Iowa and Lockport and Bolingbrook in Illinois. He also served as a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates for a number of years.
