Hovick was a stand-out in basketball and softball before the Iowa Conference started play in women's sports.
In basketball, she scored 1,150 points for a career average of 14.0 per game. She led the Knights in scoring in 1978-79 with 372 points. The following season, she was the Knights' top rebounder. She still holds school records for most consecutive free throws made, 23, and highest free throw percentage for a season, 84.1 percent.

In softball, she hit over .300 in two seasons and led the Knights in home runs, triples, doubles, and RBIs. She was Wartburg's Most Valuable Player in 1980.

She earned a master's degree in 1993 at Iowa State University. She taught and coached at Parkersburg Community High School, Colo Community High School, and Colo-Nesco High School before moving to Story City in 1998. She is now a business and physical education teacher and coach at Roland-Story High School.
