Dr. Elmer Hertel

Hertel, who died in 1981, was a longtime friend of Wart burg athletics, coaching from 1935 through 1937. He taught biology from 1931 until his retirement in 1979.

He was secretary of the Iowa Conference for 37 years. Hertel Field, home of Knights baseball, and the Hertel All-Sports Trophy, a traveling trophy that circulates each year to the top Iowa Conference school in all sports, are named after him. This was the 60th year for Wartburg's Hertel Award, which goes to the top multisport senior athlete in both men's and women's athletics.
