Earnest Oppermann '38

Oppermann coached baseball at Wartburg from 1948 to 1982, winning more than 350 games, six Iowa Conference championships, three District NAIA titles and one Area IV NAJA championship. In 1964, his team went 2-1 in the NAIA World Series. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1980. Two years later, he was named Coach of the Year for District V in Division III of the NCAA. He served on several NAIA baseball rules committees and was a frequent guest speaker at Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association clinics. He was the Knights' head football coach in 1951 and head basketball coach during the 1955-56 season. Oppermann died of cancer in 1996.
