His claim to fame was on the track. Arends still holds the school's outdoor men's high jump record at six feet, nine inches and indoor record at six feet, 11 inches as part of a career in which he was all-Iowa Conference and an NCAA Division III All-American in 1992. He was a combined eight-time letterman in both sports. Arends now resides in Fresno, California as a Pediatric Orthopedic Physician at Central Hospital.
